I Love...

FRESH CHERRIES!

Ok, this probably sounds like a random thing to say “I Love”, but I tried my first fresh cherries this weekend and I am on the verge of being fully addicted, as in I need an intervention! I have never really been a fan of cherries. I don’t really care for maraschino cherries and don’t like natural or artificially cherry flavored ANYTHING and so I just stayed clear of them all together. But when we were at a Farmers Market this weekend Terry picked some up. He was raving about how good they were, so I thought what the heck and gave into peer pressure and tried them.

Verdict: DELICIOUS.

Because I am just loving these and feel as if I need to catch up on years of lost cherry eating time, I went to the store to get more and also found yellow cherries, I think I like those even more than the regular ones. Even T. says he has never tasted a cherry as good as the yellow ones. Simply delightful. So now my afternoon snack consists of a bag of cherries, grapes and blueberries. YUM! So I guess this means I am converted, I officially love cherries. Well only the fresh ones, I still don’t like anything else with cherries or cherry flavored. Blech

So with tons of wonderful fruits over the summer, what are your favorites?
Mine are cherries (obviously), red grapes, blueberries, black berries, peaches and plums.

Any fruit recipes you would like to share?
Not a recipe, but I like yogurt with berries and granola.

Random Fact: “The cherry belongs to the family Rosaceae, genus Prunus, along with almonds, peaches, plums, apricots and bird cherries.” I did not know this, almonds are not botanically a nut but from the same family as cherries. Don't say I write just mindless crap on this here blog....I value learning as well.

  1. I am SO with you. I only like fresh cherries!

My grandpa ran a market for years and grew a lot of his own fruits, veggies and pumpkins, but also went to Michigan to get cherries once a year. The cherries he (and my dad to this day) swore by are Bing cherries.

So, allow me to feed your addiction - if you see Bing cherries in the store or at the market GET THEM. They are delicious! :)

  3. Cherries are fun because I like to spit the seeds out.

I do have a fantastic fruit pizza recipe (taking the healthiness out of it).

I will post it on our mutual blog.

  4. I had a similar experience just a few weeks ago! I hate cherry candy... although I do like Cherry Coke.

The most delicious pie I've ever had was a white cherry pie my by a friend of my mom's...like 15 years ago or something. I think white & yellow cherries are the same thing... so if you're a pie-maker, you should try it.

  5. Dri - I will totally look for the Bing Cherries!! And what is it with MI fruit, we have blueberries from up there and they are SO good!!

Grumbles - They are a little more expensive, but totally worth it as a treat! And these ones are huge, like small plums!

Iris - I have a spit cup on my desk right now for seeds and stems. Yeah, I am classy :)

Sarah - Yeah, I do like Cherry pop too...forgot about that. But NO other cherry flavored stuff :) And though I am not a pie fan (some would say I am a pie hater) my husband LOVES pies so I think I may just have to surprise him with one of these yellow cherry pies!!

  6. Hi there! I haven't been here in awhile. Your kitties are cute, even when they're not wrestling.

Michigan does offer some of the best cherries. I love all cherry-flavored stuff. A cherry/Oreo milkshake is delicious. Trust me.
